PRESIDENTS DAY

President Graham President Graham

Graham Cole's Presidents Day

The highlight of the week was on Saturday when Graham Cole’s Presidents Day match was played at the Vale. Graham had requested that members attired them selves in the brightest and most cheerful outfits they could muster, they did! The afternoon was quite sunny and warm but the match did have  a ten minute rain interruption.

The afternoon started sangria reception followed by the traditional Spider. For this event the playing members circle the green  with one foot in the ditch  At a given signal they bowl, simultaneously,  one wood at the jack centred in the middle of the green - nearest the jack wins. This year the winner was a delighted Charlotte Pennington. After the group photograph was taken the match was started by President Graham Cole. It was played in a triples format on six rinks with the bowlers divided into two teams, Home and Away.

The Home team on rink one was skipped by Peter Harrison with Pat Harrison as lead and beryl Birch at two. Opposing them were the Aways skipped by Cris Wallis with Peter Craig as lead and Grahm Scothern at two. The Home team made a positive start  but by the seventh end the Aways had levelled the scores at 6 shots each. Although the Home team won six of the remaining ends to the Aways five  the Aways superior shot score won them the game. Home 12 shots, Aways 17.

Eddie Owen skipped the Home’s on rink two with Mary Smith as lead and David Tomlinson at two.  The Aways were Paul Murrant as skip, Jenny Owen as lead and Denis Smith at two. A steady start by both teams found them with 4 shots each after four ends. The next two ends gave the Aways a lead but at the halfway point they had slipped to 1 behind. They quickly moved up a gear, established a lead  and although the Home team got to with one shot of them on the sixteenth end  a very handy 5 shots on the seventeenth end ensured them a win. Home team 15 shots, Aways 20 shots.

Rink three for the Homes had Ros Carter as lead, Alan Jones at two and the Skip  was Ray Gregory. Matt Murrant skipped the Aways with Sylvia Shalders as lead and Jackie Cole as  two. 5 shots on the seventh end gave  the Aways a 7 shot advantage  but the next five ends were won by the Home team which put them 8 shots in the lead .Despite the Aways best efforts they couldn’t close the gap giving  the Home team a win, with 22 shots to the Aways 13.

Rink four  was  skipped  for the Home team by Janet Horwood  with Anne Preston- Bambridge as lead and  Mike Shalders at three. Stuart Primarolo was the Aways Skip with Liz Naylor as lead and Barry Drain at two. By the ninth end the scores stood at Home 5 shots, Aways 11. This did not sit well with the Home team!. They knuckled down and by the sixteenth end the Aways were still on 11 shots whilst the Home team were on 14 shots. 2 shots on the seventeenth end put the Aways just 1 shot behind but the Home team took the last end with a very positive  5 shots winning the game on 19 shots to the Aways 13.
